There are 4 Sisters Mirabal. Minerva Mirabal de Tavarez, Patria Mirabal de González, María Teresa Mirabal de Guzmán and Dedé Mirabal Reyes. The Sisters Mirabal were active in the June 14 revolution movement against then dictator Rafael Trujillo. Their code name in the movement was butterfly. On November 25, 1960 Minerva, Patria and María were returning from Puerto Plata from visiting their husbands in jail. The three sisters and their driver, Rufino Cruz Disla, were murdered and then placed back in their car and pushed off a cliff in hopes to cover up the murders. These murders did not silence their voice but raised them up and they became a symbol of the movement. Back in 2001 a movie starring Salma Hayek and Edward James Olmos called In the Time of the Butterflies was released, it is a fictional account of the events. The three sisters have their silhouettes on the 200 peso bill and the 25 centavo coin. The sisters are still held in high regards in the Dominican Republic today. The museum is located in the house where they lived for the last 10 months of their lives. Their first house, where Dedé still lives is not far away in Ojos de Aqua.
